Scalp Treatment Habits You Need For Healthy Hair

We’ve all heard that hair growth begins with a healthy scalp. Maybe we’ve heard it so much that it’s almost become cliche. But let me assure you, your scalp is one thing that needs everyday attention. Follow me, as we explore some tips and tricks to a healthy scalp.
First and foremost, let’s talk about what your scalp looks like when it’s unhealthy. Unhealthy scalps are scalps with moderate dandruff, dryness, or itching. Dandruff is usually a sign of a fungal infection or just product buildup on the scalp. Typically, mild to moderate dandruff does not cause hair loss but it is quit embarrassing to look at. Hair loss can happen when your dandruff becomes excessive, this typically happens with conditions like psoriasis and eczema on the scalp. Fortunately there are ways of keeping your scalp healthy. 

1. Clean your scalp

I’m not talking about co-washing. When it comes to maintaining or establishing a healthy scalp, shampooing your scalp is important. When your scalp begins to itch more than usual or you have lots of flakes in your hair, that’s a typical sign that you need to clean your scalp. I recommend using shampoos that are sulfate free. Some natural, safe alternatives to shampooing are using Soap Nuts which have been used as a more gentle way to clean hair for centuries in India. African Black Soap is another alternative to using your traditional shampoo. I love this one because it adds so many awesome benefits to your scalp because of its anti-fungal and anti- bacterial properties. So those of you suffering from dandruff and itching would do well with this stuff. 

2. Scalp Massage

I honestly can’t stress enough how important this step is! Scalp massaging has tons of benefits to your scalp health and your overall health in general. A simple 5 minute a day scalp massage does not only relax you but also promotes hair growth. Scalp massaging stimulates circulation, which allows blood flow and oxygen to the skin on your scalp. Scalp massaging also removes mild debris from your scalp to allow for proper airflow. By distributing the natural oils your sebaceous glands produce through scalp massaging, you can also add shine to dull strands. 

3. Oiling your scalp

For some of us, we try to steer clear for adding extra oils to our hair. But there are oils that are actually amazing for scalp health! Oils like sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, coconut oil, and neem oil are all light weight oils that won't disturb your natural production of oil on your scalp. These oils also have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties that will aid in conditions like scalp psoriasis, eczema, dandruff, dryness, or itching. It's important to use oils like these on our scalp at least 3 times a week to prevent dryness in our scalp and hair. 

Having healthy hair is important to most of us. But healthy hair doesn't come easy, it requires consistent healthy hair habits. Incorporate these tips into your daily hair routine and I promise, you won't be sorry!
